Monday night, the Morgan County High School girls soccer team hosted the Lady Pirates of Pike County from Zebulon for the Sweet 16 round of the GHSA AAA Girls Soccer Tournament. Unfortunately the Lady Dogs season came down to penalty kicks and ended with Pike County taking the 2-1 win.

Pike County got the scoring started in the 31st minute off a corner but seven minutes later, Rylee Bernard blasted a shot from over 25 yards out to even the count. The game was physical from start to finish but reached its peak at the 69th minute with a red card going to Pike County.

Overtime for the GHSA is two 10 minute periods and the Lady Dogs waited 9 and half minutes to create some action in front of the Pike County goal to close both overtime periods.

Penalty kicks would decide who moved on to the Elite 8 and the Lady Dogs couldn’t seal the deal after Corey Thrower, Lofton Cathey, and Kaily Mitchell found the back of the net.

The Lady Dogs closed the season as Region 4-AAA champions and with an 11-3 overall record and unblemished in region play.

Last week, in the first round of the tournament, the Lady Dogs hosted Appling County and sent the Pirates back to Baxley without allowing them to score a goal and taking the 6-0 win.

The Lady Dogs got the scoring started early with Sidda Outlaw scoring her first of two goals in the second minute of the match. Three minutes later, Kaily Mitchell blasted a shot from over 25 feet out for the Lady Dogs second goal. Rylee Bernard’s rebound in the 12th minute gave the Lady Dogs a 3-0 lead. Lofton Cathey scored from outside the 18 in the 18th minute of the match and McKenzie Larate scored in the 20th minute to give the Lady Dogs a 5-0 lead at the half. The second half was quiet until the 74th minute when Sidda Outlaw broke past the defense to score the sixth and final goal of the match.
