MCMS wins PAC Championship in thriller

The Morgan County Middle School Bullpups capped a glorious, undefeated season on Oct. 27 by winning the Piedmont Athletic Conference (P.A.C.) Championship 8-6 against Carver Middle School.

The win, a nail-biter between two great teams, came down to a failed two-point conversion by Carver and a failed onside kick attempt with 1:30 left in the game.

4-H archery team wins national title

After winning the state competition, four members of the Morgan County 4-H Archery team traveled to Grand Island, Nebraska, and brought back the national title.

The team, comprised of Tim Smith, 18; his brother Tom Smith, 16, Daniel Lott, 16 and Dawson Martin, 17, sported glorious mullet hair cuts throughout the season. Coach Danny Pincus joined in the fun with a threat to cut them off if they didn’t win it all. The mullets were safe after the five-day tournament in June.

Tom Smith shattered previous records, winning the top individual award each day of the tournament and winning first place in the individual category for the national tournament. His brother Tom finished fifth overall individually.

Volleyball scores Back-to-Back Region Championships

The Spike Dogs closed their season with a 29-14 overall record including an undefeated record in region play at 12-0.

The defending region 4-AAA champions went on to the Elite 8 round of the 2021 GHSA Volleyball tournament where they fell to Cherokee Bluff in close sets.

Bass Fishing Team brings home first-ever tournament win for MCHS

History was made this April on Lake Hartwell as the Morgan County High School Bass Fishing Team brought home its first high school tournament win.

Will Thomas and Landon Huff netted five fish for a combined weight of 13.98 pounds in the Georgia BASS High School fishing event.

The community rallied around Jacob Martin, a Morgan County High School soccer player battling cancer, for a special celebration commemorating his last round of chemotherapy on March 30.

The stands were filled with cheering friends, family and community members clad in “Jacob Strong” shirts for the MCHS soccer game in which Jacob put up three goals that night, pulling off an elusive ‘hat trick,’ just a day after completing his final chemo treatment. The team wore bright gold kits with ‘Jacob Strong’ across the back to support Martin’s battle with cancer.

Girls tennis win region champs

The Lady Dogs swept both Academy of Richmond County and Burke County for the region championship in April. The Bulldogs brought the runner up trophy back to Madison, where both teams hosted the first round of the state playoffs.

The Lady Dogs battled their way to the Elite 8 round of the 2021 GHSA AAA Girls Tennis Tournament, but fell to a tough Stephens County team 2-3.

MCHS soccer teams go undefeated to secure 4-AAA title

Both Morgan County High School soccer teams closed their region schedule with a pair of wins over Richmond County and Thomson to claim the GHSA Region 4-AAA championships.

The Lady Dogs went on to the Sweet 16 round of the GHSA AAA Girls Soccer Tournament where they lost a heartbreaker to Pike County.

The Dogs made it to the Elite 8 before falling in the final round of a hard-fought bout with Coahulla Creek to end the season.

Track and Cross Country teams win Region 4-AAA

The Morgan County High School track and field team took the Region 4-AAA title, sending more than 20 athletes to the state meet in Albany where the boys team claimed a top 10 finish and the girls a top 20 finish.

The Cross Country teams also took the Region title and competed in Carrollton for the 2021 GHSA State Cross Country Meet in November. Ari Paine had a season best time of 25:06.93 and Sam Wingfield led the boys with a top 10 finish.

Cheer Dogs Champs

The Morgan County High School cheer teams competed against 25 teams in October to win the region championship and a berth into the GHSA state championship where they went on to place fourth in the state competition at the Macon Centreplex in November.

Football miracle win

The Bulldogs welcomed new head coach Clint Jenkins to the field this year who went on to build a foundation for a successful football program in the future. After a rocky start the Bulldogs clawed their way into the first round of the state playoffs with a “miracle win” that defied the odds.

To advance to the state playoffs, the Dogs not only needed to win against region foe Harlem, but needed to win by 10 points. Down 22-0 after the first quarte and 29-15 at the half, the Morgan County Bulldogs ruled the second half to walk away with a ten-point lead: 39-29.

Morgan County later fell to state powerhouse Peach County 42-3 in the first round of the Georgia State AAA football playoffs.

Despite the loss, Head Coach Clint Jenkins said the team, and the season it produced, was a positive step in the program. Morgan County finished with a 4-7 overall record, went 3-3 in AAA Region 4 play and finished the year as the number 3 seed from the region.
