One of two suspects wanted for first degree arson in the attempt to start a fire in a restroom at Madison’s Town Park has been identified as a 15-year-old male, reports state.
According to Madison Police Department reports, officers along with the Madison Fire Department were dispatched to the restrooms at the West Jefferson Street location at 4:37 p.m. on Thursday, June 24.
Reports state that investigators found burned paper in the men’s restroom and paper lining the floors and walls. Water and paper towels were stuffed into a sink and a strap to the baby changing station was completely burned off. Reports state that a woman who rents the office portion of the building from the city called authorities after she noticed a strong smell of smoke permeating the building.
Video surveillance at the bathroom show two white males enter at 4:05 p.m. with their faces uncovered, according to reports. The same video allegedly shows the two males leaving the restroom at 4:25 p.m., this time one of the males had his shirt pulled over his face and the second male had a grey hoodie pulled over his face with the drawstring tightened.
Madison Police Chief Bill Ashburn said the city will consider arson charges against the suspects.
