A Monroe man remains hospitalized and faces DUI charges after a head-on collision on Sandy Creek Road Thursday.
According to Georgia State Patrol reports, Cantrell Deshun Smith, 36, has been charged with DUI, failure to maintain lane and driving while license suspended following a violent head-on crash on Aug. 19.
Reports state that Smith was driving a 1986 Nissan truck west on Sandy Creek Road approximately a half mile from the intersection of Sandy Creek Road and Bostwick Highway when the truck crossed over the centerline and struck a 2013 Toyota van driven by 58-year-old Lee Kennedy, Madison.
Kennedy was also transported for injuries to Piedmont Hospital in Athens. The wreck occurred at approximately 2 p.m. Sandy Creek Road was blocked for approximately two hours while emergency personnel worked the incident. After impact, reports state, both vehicles came to rest on the south shoulder of the road.
