A second man, police said Monday, was shot in the hand during an altercation at the Orchard Grove apartment complex on Sunday, Nov. 7, that resulted in the death of a Greene County man.

According to Det. Wes Thompson, Madison Police Department, officers learned late on the night of the shooting that Cadarious Wright, 20, of Madison, was treated for a rifle shot to the hand at Piedmont Walton Hospital after multiple shots erupted at Orchard Grove around 6:10 p.m.

Thompson said on Friday, Nov. 12, Justin Nesbitt, 32, of Madison, was interviewed at the Madison Police Department and following the interview was arrested and charged with aggravated assault in the shooting of Wright.

Thompson said investigators believe two factions were in dispute in the parking lot of the apartment complex located behind Ingles when Stacy Mitchell, 54, of Woodville, was shot several times by a 10mm pistol.

Thompson said the shooting may have stemmed from an earlier argument at the complex. “We believe it is from an earlier fight from a month and a half ago,” he said.

He also said authorities believe it was Nesbitt that drove Mitchell to Morgan Medical Center for treatment following the shooting. At the time, authorities were seeking the driver of a silver vehicle that drove to the hospital, left Mitchell with medical personnel and left, Thompson said.

Thompson said shell casings from a rifle and a 10mm pistol were found in the parking lot. The detective said Madison Police Department officers and Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) agents continue to investigate the shooting. “We are still following up on leads,” he said.

Mitchell died in an ambulance enroute to Athens from multiple gunshots, Madison Police Chief Bill Ashburn said. Thompson said an autopsy on Mitchell has been completed at the GBI Crime Lab and authorities are awaiting those results.
