By Nick Nunn staff writer The Morgan County High School (MCHS) competition cheerleading team placed ninth out of 16 teams in the AAA division at the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) state competition in Columbus last Saturday, Nov. 16.
“We were hoping for a top 10 finish and we accomplished that goal,” said MCHS Cheerleading Coach Denise Frost. “We are very proud of all of the girls on the squad who made this happen.”
The MCHS competition cheerleading team placed third in 8-AAA during the region competition on Nov. 9. to continue to the GHSA state sectionals. North Oconee and Oconee County High Schools took the first and second place spots in the region, respectively, and East Jackson High School placed fourth to continue onto the state sectionals as well.
“We are in a very difficult region with North Oconee and Oconee being our top competitors,” said MCHS Cheerleading Coach Christen Seabolt about Morgan County’s region competition. “Honestly, we were looking at just performing well for our seniors and feeling good about our performance when we left the mat.” The GHSA state sectionals began last Friday, Nov. 15, in Columbus.
The Morgan County cheerleaders had to place in the top eight positions among 21 AAA teams to be able to advance to the state finals, which would take place the next day. “The energy level of the girls at sectionals was undeniable,” said Coach Seabolt.
“I knew we were going to advance to the finals strictly based on their attitudes and enthusiasm.” MCHS placed sixth in AAA in the sectionals, earning one of the eight spots left for sectional winners in the state finals. The eight sectional winners, including Morgan County, competed against the eight region champs from AAA during the state finals on Saturday, Nov. 16, for the GHSA State Championship.
“Friday evening we all dressed up in our red and black and went out to eat together for team bonding and turned in early to rest up for finals on Saturday,” said Seabolt. “During warm-ups, we had a difficult stunt not hit but the girls pulled it together during the performance and made it all hit!”
During the state finals, the MCHS competition cheerleading team placed ninth overall in state for division AAA, accomplishing the team’s goal of finishing in the top ten during the finals. “We took each Saturday’s competition and thoroughly read the judge’s sheets and tried really hard to work on what we were counted off on,” said Coach Seabolt.
“We made gains at each competition and the hard work and diligence paid off with our advancing to state finals. Most importantly, we all had lots of fun and feel really good about how we finished the season up.” For those who couldn’t make it to Columbus for the state finals, but would like to see the MCHS competition cheerleading team in action, the GHSA competition cheerleading state finals will be broadcast of GPBTV on Nov. 23 at 5 p.m., Nov. 24 at 6 p.m., and Nov. 26 at 7 p.m.
