Our Family Ties group of about 30 enjoyed a wonderful Valentine’s Day meal and program prepared by the Apalachee Baptist Church on Monday, February 10. After a delicious home-cooked meal of chicken, (real) creamed potatoes, baked beans, slaw, and a smorgasbord of desserts the crowd enjoyed an informational program, and then encouraging words from the church’s pastor, Alan Cagle.
Each family then received a box of staple toiletry items and paper products, and each caregiver was given a heart box of chocolates, while the children all got boxes of conversation hearts.
It was truly a wonderful evening. The white stuff kept us at bay Wednesday and Thursday, but Friday we were open for business as usual and those who ventured out enjoyed our annual Valentine’s Day celebration, complete with activities that included guessing the brand of Valentine’s candy, number of conversation hearts in the candy jar, best lips competition, and several other fun games.
Six contestants were vying for the top honor of our Sweethearts: Lenora Crowley, Alice Scott, Bertha Thomas, Roy Spence, Willie Releford, and Jim Prugh. When we tallied the scores, Bertha Thomas and Jim Prugh had hedged out the competition for the crowns.
Everyone got a bag of Valentine Candy, and left winners and free of the cabin fever that had kept them at home most of the week! The focus this week is on our Powerful Tools For Caregivers workshop that began on Wednesday afternoon, the 19, at 2p.m. Everything needed is furnished and there is no charge.
If you miss this week, you can still start the class next Wednesday, and those attending four of the sixsessions receive a certificate. Please consider this opportunity if you are caring for a loved one, or other special needs friend or neighbor. Call (706)342-1614 about this opportunity or if you have a question about the services offered by the Senior Center and Transit.
