A 16-year-old Madison teen remains detained at the Sandersville Youth Detention Center after allegedly shooting a man three times during an argument over a dice game.
According to Carl Jones, assistant police chief, Madison Police Department, Raymond Coats, Jr., 27, Madison, was shot after he argued with the teen during a craps game at the Orchard Grove Apartment complex. Jones said Coats was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center following the 3:30 a.m. shooting last Wednesday, July 10.
The teenager was arrested at his Sulgrave Drive home by Madison Police officers and Morgan County Sheriff’s Office deputies. Reports state that the teen allegedly fled Orchard Grove on a red ATV. The vehicle was located behind his house, reports state, and the engine was warm. Officers tracked the ATV from Orchard Grove to the Sulgrave Drive address and located the teen in the house. Jones said the teen was “pretending to be asleep” when he was arrested. Officers confiscated cash, a single dice and a 9mm bullet from the teen. Jones said Coats was shot with a 9mm pistol.
Witnesses at the apartment complex told officers that they heard four shots. Jones said Coats was struck in the buttocks, right lower back and left leg. Jones said Coats has been released from the hospital. Jones said Coats and the teen began to argue during the dice game and that Coats allegedly struck the teen. The teen then allegedly pulled a pistol and shot Coats.
Jones said officials continue to investigate the shooting and have an interest in determining how the teen acquired the pistol.
Investigators located three expired 9mm casings and one live 9mm round behind the 200 building at the apartment complex.
Jones said the teen will be charged with aggravated assault. He also said that the suspect has prior juvenile complaints against him in Morgan County.
