The Morgan County High School (MCHS) JV football team beat East Jackson in Commerce last Thursday, Oct. 18, ending the 2013 season with a 18-0 shutout against the Eagles.

The JV Dogs, a handful of devoted parents, and the JV cheerleader squad endured the cold rain that fell throughout the entire game. The soaked fans and poncho-wearing cheerleaders didn’t let the rain dampen their spirits; Morgan County’s attendance matched or exceeded that of the home team’s from beginning to end.

Morgan County’s defense held East Jackson from advancing during their first-quarter and second-quarter drives, but the Dogs’ offense didn’t score their first touchdown until only three minutes remained in the second quarter.

The Dogs took over very deep in East Jackson’s territory and were able to get into the end zone after only three plays. Morgan County also put the ball into the end zone during a two-point conversion attempt to make the score 8-0 in the Dogs’ favor.

Again, East Jackson was forced to start their next drive deep in their own territory. Morgan County’s defense, who had been consistently pushing the Eagles back all game, forced East Jackson to ground the ball in their end zone, resulting in a safety for Morgan County.

The Dogs remained ahead 10-0 through the first half. During the third quarter, the Dogs earned their last touchdown of the game with a short-yard drive into the end zone. Morgan County earned another two points after the touchdown to make the score 18-0.

Morgan County was mostly able to control the clock through the remainder of the third and fourth quarters. East Jackson began to put together a drive late in the last quarter but had to give up their last possession after not being able to convert a first down with 11 yards to go on a fourth-down play.

The 18-0 marks a good end to the MCHS JV Dogs’ 2013 season.
