By Nick Nunn staff writer The Morgan County Middle School (MCMS) wrestling team got their season off to a great start last week with victories over Oglethorpe County and Madison County on Wednesday, Nov. 6, and a team win at the Oglethorpe County Jr. Patriot Tournament last Saturday, Nov. 9.

The MCMS Mat Dogs faced Oglethorpe County and Madison County at home for their first duals of the season and came out with overpowering wins against both schools. Morgan County outscored Oglethorpe 60-35 to begin the competitions and went on to beat Madison County 69-24 to finish out the day. The two wins got the Mat Dogs off to a 2-0 record for the season.

“We should have a good year again,” said MCMS Wrestling Coach Mark Roper. “The league we are in has some very good teams competing this season so we will have to continue to get better every week.

Even though this is only the second week of practice the returning wrestlers were able to perform well to get us the early season victories.” Still charged by the wins against Oglethorpe and Madison, the MCMS Dogs traveled to the Jr. Patriot Tournament in Oglethorpe County last Saturday, where they took first place with a total team score of 263.

Social Circle, the second place finisher, scored 256 during the tournament. Other teams that competed last Saturday were Madison County, East Jackson, Athens Christian School, Oglethorpe County, Georgia Military College, George Walton Academy and Clark United. Garner Drummond, Zack Smith, and Trey Davis won their respective weight classes.

According to Coach Roper, the team also had three wrestlers finish in second place, three finish third, and five finish in fourth place. The MCMS Mat Dogs’ next duals will take place today, Nov. 14, in Social Circle against Social Circle and George Walton beginning at 4:30 p.m. On Nov. 23, the wrestling team will travel back to Social Circle again for the Redskin Rumble tournament.
