Morgan County freshman Jody McAlister placed third at the Georgia Freshman State Tournament at Peachtree Ridge High School this past Saturday, March 11.
The annual event, which is sanctioned by USA Wrestling, brings together the best high school freshmen from all of Georgia’s six classifications in a single competition. McAlister earned a bye in the first round of the tournament because of his runner-up finish at the Southeast National Battle at the Dome tournament the week before. In the second round, McAlister earned a win by fall against a Lowndes County opponent but lost a 4-5 decision in the quarterfinals to drop into the consolation bracket.
After the 4-5 decision loss, McAlister earned four straight victories, including a 10-2 major decision win against the Cass High School opponent that he lost to earlier in the bracket, in order to earn his third-place finish. “This young man has really dedicated himself to being the best he can be,” said MCHS Wrestling Coach John Robbins. “It’s not uncommon for us to have wrestlers chomping at the bit to compete so soon after the GHSA Finals, but normally there aren’t that many freshman with this type of work ethic.”
