he Morgan-Madison Cultural Center (MMCC) held its early Madison In May fundraiser on May 1-3. Madison in May is the yearly spring tour throughout Madison, which includes historic homes, landmarks and churches. Tickets were $25 for members, $30 for non-members and $15 for students. “It was a wonderful event. We had over 1000 attendants, and over 200 volunteers and docents. Final ticket sales have not been all tallied yet,” said Erin Garrett, development director for the MMCC. “Our goal is to raise between $25,000 and $35,000. Ticket sales are great. We are on par and very excited about the outcome this year,” said Garrett. The spring tour of homes has been a long running tradition in Madison for over 30 years. The cultural center took it over about 20 years ago. Garrett noted that this year’s tour featured extra sites not previously included in past years. “It’s a mixture of private residences and the churches, but what is unique and different this year is that the Historic Societies in town have agreed to have their sites on tour as well,” said Garrett. Some of spots featured on the tour were: Heritage House, Rose Cottage, and Rogers House.
“Our town is so pretty. People really enjoy this tour and they come from all over the country for it,” said Garrett. “We’ve had several bus groups come in from Anderson, SC., Gainesville, Powder Springs, and people visit from Florida, Alabama, North Carolina and even Seattle, Wash.” The income from the May in Madison fundraiser will be used to support the programming at the MMCC and well as the upkeep of the MMCC building. “These kind of fundraisers help keep ticket costs low for students and enable us to give our usual four free concerts a year for the community,” said Garrett. “It also helps with scholarships for students who want to go to art camp over the summer and the free family workshops we offer.” “We also have a lot of upkeep to do in this old building. It’s a lot of work to maintain the wonderful artifacts we have here,” said Garrett.
