Mama, Daddy, (Blanche and Jake Wilson) and I had a real treat on the 4th of July as we were invited over to Evelyn Hanes home in Winterville for a BBQ. Evelyn’s father, Jack, has been making his home with Evelyn for the past few years. Well, they had a Brunswick Stew making day a week or two ago using Jack’s special recipe. Now, he can make some good stew! Back before Jack and Louise moved in with Evelyn, Mama, Jack, and Louise would make up a batch of stew from time to time. He make some good, good stew!
They had invited the rest of the family, Suzanne Washington and her husband along with Chuck and his friend as well as friends and neighbors. It was such a nice day! Evelyn’s house will be 100 years old next year and she has it fixed up so nice. I love old houses; they just have all kinds of nooks and crannies in them to give them character! Her house started out as a Sears Pre-fab house–I think I have heard that you just ordered it as you would anything from the Sears catalog. Of course, it has been added onto and when Jack and Louise moved in, they added on a very nice handicap accessible apartment in the back for them.
Bruce tells me he thinks he has heard that the Everette Cason house here in the Bethany community was a pre-fab house, too. Jack is doing very well and is also doing some gardening. The town of Winterville has a community garden with raised beds and you can rent a raised bed or two for your own at a very reasonable rate.
Jack is growing some fabulous tomato plants in his. They have even come and took pictures of his. The city also has water pipes and a drip hose run to each of the beds and they are watered regularly at no extra cost. Again, it was a very enjoyable day with old friends. Back to the community garden—did Madison try to do this in front of the old Piggly Wiggly building? Something is coming back to me…… We all want to congratulate Bart and Samantha Cathy on their arrival of their newest member of their family, a little girl, who they have named Braylin. She made her appearance very early in the morning on the 4th of July.
She weighed 8 1/2 lbs. and was 21 inches long. Gerald and Andrea Cathey are the proud grandparents! Braylin is welcomed home by her big sisters, Taylor and Harlie and her big brother, Malachi. Congratulations to all of them! Bethany Baptist Church will have their Bible School starting on this coming Friday night, July 11th, beginning at 6:30 – 8:30 p.m., then again on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m., and then will finish up on Sunday morning by having a program for the congregation in the morning service at 11 p.m. They have a lot of fun things for the children to do. Come join them! Joanie Bruce will have a book signing for her new book, “A Memory Worth Dying For” at the Barnes and Noble Bookstore in Athens on this Thursday night, July 10th, from 6 -8 p.m. This is Joanie’s second book! Ben and Joanie enjoyed having all their children home with them this past weekend.
We also want to tell Ben Porter Happy Birthday as he turned the magic age of 16 this past week and he also got his driver’s license. Now all the Porter boys are licensed drivers! That is hard to believe, too! They all celebrated his birthday and the 4th of July weekend down at Lake Oconee at Bill and Sue Hodge’s lake home. Bertie and Leon Alligood of Lebanon, Tenn. stopped by here on their way home from Moultrie on Monday afternoon, and spent the night and Tuesday with all of us. Tim and Kacey are here now and there has been much visiting going on also with different ones. Tim and Kacey spent the 4th of July on Lake Sinclair with the Marty Wilsons, the Marc Fortsons, Zach and Alex Wilson, and the Stewart Thigpens. They got to see the spectacular fireworks show on Lake Sinclair and they said it was the best one they had ever seen; that Madison’s didn’t hold a candle to it….that is hard to believe, isn’t it? The McRee family reunion was held on Saturday down at Bonner’s Restaurant in Buckhead.
Joan Harper with her girls, Beth Bishop, Jill Penn, and Jane White from White Plains along with their spouses and families along with Tom and Patricia Chafin from Virginia Beach, Va. along with their boys, Lee’s family from Hartwell and James Chafin from Elberton, and Louise and Kendall Marett from Hartwell and their daughter and family were among those attending along with many of the family from the Buckhead area and around. They all enjoyed visiting and catching up with one another. Bob Moorhead has been enjoying a week at the beach with the Richard Smith family from Columbus. Chuck and Janice Philippi enjoyed spending the 4th of July weekend in Gatlinburg. Sarah Nell and Steve Craig spent the 4th of July in Acworth with their daughter and family, the Aaron Kennys.
Brent, Stacy, and Layna Loudermelk of North Carolina also joined them. The Marvin Ingalsbes had a big weekend with 21 out of 23 of their family coming to spend the long 4th of July holiday with them. They enjoyed celebrating the 4th, having Christmas in July, and also celebrated Aaron’s birthday. Macy Malcom is having an adventure this summer where she is studying abroad in Europe. She flew into Barcelona and then went to Paris and is now in Innsbruck, Austria where she will be having classes all summer. Marlee Malcom has recently participated in a Break-a-way Roping Rodeo event in Decatur, Texas at the Roy Cooper Roping Rodeo. She won a couple of nice checks and came out fifth in the average. Congratulations, Marlee! Good job! Gail and Lee Eaton had a big 4th of July BBQ and get-together at their home here on Baldwin Dairy Road on the 4th. They said around 80 people came which included most of the Eaton family, Olena Eaton’s side of the family, along with some of Gail’s family.
A big, big day! Hannah Eaton will finish up with the 4-H camp season at the end of this week. Gail is helping with the Buckhead Bapt. Church VBS this week. Sandra and Jerry Brown enjoyed the 4th with Jerry’s people in Sparta and then the night before they enjoyed the big get-together at Cindy and Dennis Stewart’s annual 4th get-together at their home on Old Buckhead Road where everyone has a good view of the fireworks.
The Steve Leos of Grayson along with Steve’s parents from Australia spent Thursday, the 4th of July here in the country with Tommy and Raynor Cathey and at Dale Massey’s Duck Pond Farm in Buckhead where the children enjoyed had a lot of fun things to do. That night they all the annual chicken BBQ and fireworks at Buckhead. Esther and Tim Curry made a big churn of peach ice cream on Sunday afternoon and invited Bob and Danielle Bruce and the girls, Larry and Maxine Bruce, Amy and Derrell Greenway to come and enjoy it. Ben Bruce also dropped in. I have not made the first churn this year as of yet…..that is almost a sin!!
