Charlemagne Gibbons has announced that he will be resigning as the head coach of the Morgan County High School (MCHS) boys’ basketball team in order to take an assistant coach position at Florida Atlantic University. “It was one of the toughest decisions of my life,” said Gibbons about the choice to leave Morgan County the year after the boys’ basketball team won the AAA State Title.

“I had to leave a great bunch of kids that have become my family. Leaving after a state title was hard as well considering that we are front-runners to compete for the state title again.” Gibbons stated that he had been approached with other offers before Florida Atlantic, but several factors – including Florida Atlantic head coach Michael Curry, the school’s location, and its education system – sealed the deal.

“I was approached by Florida Atlantic shortly after the NCAA Final Four by the newly named coach Michael Curry, who is from Augusta and formerly head coach of the Detroit Pistons of the NBA,” explained Gibbons. “I’ve had job opportunities over the past few years but this was one I could not pass up.” MCHS Athletic Director Steve Cisson said that the search for Gibbons’ replacement is already underway. “We have already began the search for the best coach that we can find and already have several quality applicants from all over this state and a couple from Florida,” said Cisson.

“It is important to us to hire the best coach that we can to maintain the level of success that we have experienced under Coach Gibbons. We have some talented players who deserve to be taken care of in the best way possible.” Gibbons wanted to thank MCHS’ administration and staff, as well as his assistant coaches and the Morgan County fan base for supporting the program during his tenure as coach.

“I truly hope that we have created a tradition that will continue to grow from here and continue to represent Morgan County,” said Gibbons. “I’m not sure who the next coach will be, but he will have the best job in the state with the best fan support and players in the state. I expect our fans and community to support and show him the wonderful treatment that I received during my tenure.” “It’s truly been a great ride.”
