The Madison Downtown Development Authority (DDA) and Harvest of the Heart Garden (HHG) will hold a Town Hall meeting for Districts One and Five from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, July 11, at St. Paul’s A.M.E. Church, 847 Fifth St.

City Planner Monica Callahan will provide an update about neighborhood investment projects while members of HHG will share information about their new food distribution center, to be located in the Gilmore house at 473 Burney St.

The Madison City Council purchased the Gilmore house for more than $87,000 in September 2012 and subsequently transferred it to the DDA.

The DDA has plans for the property to include residential units upstairs and incubator space for small businesses downstairs.

There’s also space for a community room in the main building and a corner grocery store near where the pink building stood.

Not only that, HHG has plans to distribute food as well as to furnish and operate a community cannery there, to be run by Co-garden director Amanda Behrendsen-Dalton.

The non-profit organization, founded by Jewel Hatcher, currently grows and distributes produce, as well as offers some clothing and household items to those in need at its Monticello Highway location.

Co-garden director Deb Foster rounds out the leadership for HHG.

As one of 30 recipients of a $35,000 Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant, HHG will provide emergency produce out of the Gilmore house following a disaster.

Also during the Town Hall meeting, Sherry Terrell-Alexander will speak about the Neighborhood Action Group.

According to information shared in March, the group will work like a phone tree with five or six block captains participating.

Callahan shared that comments and questions will be welcomed at the Town Hall meeting and that light refreshments will be served.
