Deacon Alonzo Wadsworth Sumpter died Friday, August 30, 2013. He was born September 21, 1922 to the late Samuel and Leona Crowdler Sumpter in Love Joy, Illinois. He joined the First Corinthian Baptist Church at an early age and began working in the vineyard of the Lord. He accepted Christ as his person Savior and was later ordained as a deacon. He served faithfully at Progressive Church of God in Christ while he was in Somerset, New Jersey. After moving to Georgia he began serving at Grace Missionary Church, where he dutifully led songs of praise until his health failed and he was no longer able to attend. He was a World War II veteran serving in the United States Army.

He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Dorothy Broadnax Sumpter of Buckhead; a daughter Dr. Angela (Dr. Theodore) Davis of Roscoe, Ill.; two sons, Alonzo Sumter Jr. and Floyd Sumpter of Somerset, N.J.; one surrogate son Horace Broadnax of Madison; one sister Mattie B. Buckneer, Peoria, Ill., one daughter-in-law Cathy Jones Sumpter, New Brunswick, New Jersey’ three sisters-in-law Nancy Broadnax of Madison, Ruby Broadnax of Somerset, New Jersey and Ann (Bishop Derrick) Smith Sr. of Brooklyn, N.Y.; four brothers-in-law Eugene Broadnax and Rev. Barry (Dr. Jannie H.) Broadnax, all of Buckhead, James (Brenda) Broadnax of Lithonia, and Kenneth Broadnax of Madison; five grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, three great great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be held at Jones and Turner Funeral Home Chapel, Burney Street, Madison at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 7. Repast will be held immediately following the service on the Broadnax / Sumpter properties, Buckhead. Interment will be in the Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Milledgeville on Monday, Sept. 9.
