For four solid weeks this summer, junior Karian Smith left her grandmother's house in Atlanta, boarded MARTA and took the train to the DeKalb County campus of DeVry University.

That’s just three of the suggestions Morgan County Primary first graders had when asked the meaning of patriotism by a decorated World War II veteran.

Scented candles. Wind chimes. Lamp light. Colorful rugs. Blue cloth billowing from the ceiling lights to soften the glare and cast a sky-colored hue on the room. Inspirational quotes on the wall: “Dear God, open my heart so that the whole world can fall in.”
