Healthcare reform ‘shameless power grab’
Submitted by editor on Mon, 08/31/2009 - 14:55.To the Editor:
I’m confused. The left rails against the “lunatic fringe” and the “far-right radicals” who are “stopping” health care reform. Nancy Pelosi calls protestors “Nazi’s” and other leftist congressmen call them “racists.” Yet according the latest Pew poll, Americans think the protestors are acting properly by a huge two-to-one margin, and three out of five sympathize with their views.
Leftists complain about “Astroturf” protestors, while unions bus activists to Town Halls with professionally made signs to hassle elderly, populist crowds. Health care is probably the most complicated system on the planet, yet leftists are in a panicked rush to pass a bill this autumn.
Even more perplexing is the fact that Democrats own a super-majority in the House and the Senate--and they control the White House. They have the power to pass this thing without a single conservative vote. Why don’t they just do it?
Populists aren’t fear mongering. They’re reading the actual verbiage in these bills and asking their congressmen tough questions. Is it any wonder people get angry when legislators deliberately or unknowingly misstate what’s in these bills?
The left is peddling something the public does not want. The administration hasn’t lost the right, but the center of the country. Less than a third of independents favor “Obamacare.”
Eighty five percent of Americans are happy with their health care.
Community’s support of hospital shows in ‘Friends’ success
Submitted by editor on Mon, 08/31/2009 - 14:51.To the Editor:
Our community's steadfast commitment to Morgan Memorial Hospital was evident by the more than 250 people who turned out for the Ninth Annual Festival of Friends. While we are still counting, this year's Festival of Friends resulted in raising approximately $34,000 for the hospital, and of course, we would welcome any additional donations which may be sent to Festival of Friends, P.O. Box 860, Madison, GA 30650.
The Morgan Memorial Hospital Auxiliary wishes to thank everyone who helped this event to be so successful. Our thanks go, especially, to all of the hosts and hostesses, without whom this Festival would not exist. These generous people created the fabulous parties, at their own expense, which make up the Festival of Friends each year. I've heard compliments all week about the food and fun had by all.
We want to thank everyone at the James Madison Conference Center where the Cocktail Party has been held for the last three years. The cooperation and help we have received from the staff is deeply appreciated. We also want to thank the merchants and citizens who graciously donated goods and services to our auction. We especially want to thank Whidby Jewelers who once again generously donated a diamond necklace which resulted in the sale of almost 200 raffle tickets.
Take arguments to the park, not the page

The current three-to-four week cycle of he-said-she-said letters to the editor, rebuttals, and counter rebuttals leaves this reader frustrated by the lack of immediacy one finds in debates. With the opening of our new Bicenntenial Park, may I suggest that the City Council designate one corner as Speakers' Corner, similar to that In London's Hyde Park, thereby providing a venue for our local cognoscenti to air their views with the benefit of immediate feedback and response from the opposition. Let's give our 'bloviators' a venue where their differences can be openly discussed for all to enjoy. Failing this, I recommend pistols at dawn (but not in the park).

Touchdown Club kicks off the season
Submitted by editor on Thu, 08/20/2009 - 21:06.To the Editor:
The Morgan County Touchdown Club has been very busy getting ready for the 2009 football season.
Our first big fund-raiser was a golf tournament held on Friday, July 31 at Hard Labor Creek. The tournament was a huge success with 95 people playing in the tournament. Our football team came to the event, carrying bags and serving beverages to the participants.
We would like to thank all of our volunteers and the many individuals that donated their time and/or gifts, as well as the following people and companies for their support, including Golf Hole Sponsors: Glenn’s BBQ; Red Door Studios/The Caboose; Bo’s Wrecker; Shepco Paving, Inc.; Lane Professional Painter; Jim Boyd and Associates; Medicine Shoppe; NBC Realty; ProCare Cleaners; Morgan County Citizen; Jones, Ewing, Dobbs, Tamplin; Breco; Ye Olde Colonial; James Bates: james.bates.pope.spivey; Bank of Madison; Covington Hearth and Homes; Madison Car Care; Kessler Sports; Bostwick Cotton Gin Festival; Bojangles; Collier Construction; Big Catch Lakeside Grill; Wilhoite Gas Co., Inc; and Kiddyland/United Towers; and Corporate Sponsors: ISC Inc., Curb Specialist and Massey Law Firm. And a special thanks to The Creek at Hard Labor, Chick-Fil-A and Devon Hayes.
Our football team participated in a camp held at the high school Friday, August 7 to Sunday, August 9. Players camped out in various parts of the school and had several practice sessions throughout the weekend. The Touchdown Club organized meals and snacks for the players. Thanks to Bostwick United Methodist Church, Macedonia Church, Madison Catholic Church and Centennial Baptist Church for providing meals for the players. The Touchdown Club cooked for the team on Sunday morning--the traditional pancake, sausage, bacon and grits breakfast!
Local says thank you to his life savers

Recently, August 5, I was involved in a rather serious traffic accident on the By-Pass.
The purpose of this letter is to express my thanks to those who through their rapid response and professionalism enabled me to receive immediate transportation to the Gwinnett Medical Center (a Class 2 ER Center) within a few minutes of the collision.
My family and I would like to express our appreciation to Morgan County EMS, Morgan County Fire Department, Madison Police Department, the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department, the Georgia State Patrol and the Life Flight Group.
Many times we take these people for granted. Remember, they literally hold our lives in their hands.
