Last week, the MCHS JV baseball team defeated Rockdale County, Eastside, Jackson High School for a perfect week in the diamond. These victories extend the JV team’s still perfect season to 11-0. The C-Team also won their sole game 8-6 against Washington-Wilkes.
The JV’s week began with a 15-5 victory over Rockdale County.
The Dogs were leading 6-1 going into the fourth inning, when Rockdale scored four to bring the game within a single run, but Morgan County responded to their advance, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the fourth.
In the fifth, Morgan County scored their 15th run, which ended the game 15-5 according to the 10-run mercy rule.
Against Eastside, Morgan County was trailing 2-5 after the fifth inning, despite loading the bases in the first four innings of the game.
The Dogs would come alive in the sixth inning, however, with the last three runs coming from a home run by Maclane Zant with runners on first and second.
After adding another two runs in the seventh inning, Morgan County came out ahead of Eastside 10-5.
In Morgan County’s 6-2 win over Jackson High School, Jackson scored their only two runs in the bottom of the first and then were silent at the plate.
The Dogs scored three runs in the top of the second to take a lead they would never relinquish. Another run in the third and two more in the seventh filled out the Dogs’ final score at 6-2.
“On the defensive side, we played flawlessly after the first inning,” said Coach Connelly. “In this game, the winner is determined a lot of times by who makes the fewest mistakes. Our defense has been solid all season, and today it helped us find a way to win even though we weren’t our best at the plate.”

Last Saturday morning in downtown Madison, the Chick-fil-A Race Series held a 5K race and a one mile run/walk to benefit Madison’s Hand in Hand Ministries, Inc.
Hand in Hand Ministries, Inc., goal is “creating homes for developmentally and mentally challenged adults in Morgan County and surrounding counties, who either want to live ‘independently’ or whose families are unable to care for them,” according to their website, http://www.handinhandministries.com/
The funds raised by this year’s 5K race will be donated to Hand in Hand Ministries in memory of Scott Lee Mason, “one of those young adults whose dream was to move out of his parents’ home and live independently with others who shared the same dreams and challenges.”
One hundred sixty-four runners participated in the 5K Saturday morning and, in addition to an overall ranking, placement of the finishers was divided by gender and age grouping.
Daniel Pelvin placed first overall with a time of 16 minutes and 49 seconds. Amy Bartholomew placed first in the female division, finishing in 19 minutes and 56 seconds.

The Morgan County High School JV tennis team ended their season with a girls’ victory over Madison County and a sweep over Georgia Military College by the boys’ team.
Morgan County’s boys played solely singles matches against GMC. Mason Devane, Brayden Hutcheson, Corey Hopson, Matt Vill, Tom Ring, and Will Parker all defeated their opponents by wide margins.
The girls’ team managed only one doubles victory over GMC; Grace Campbell and Chase Catterton beat their opponent 8-4.
The girls’ team turned it around against Madison County with singles victories by Julia Zanotti, Jordan Armour, and Maggie Hume, and a doubles win by Ryann Pittman and Morgan Nash.
Morgan County’s boys couldn’t manage a win against Madison County. Hopson and Devane had close matches but lost 6-8 and 5-8 respectively.
“This has been a great season and I have loved working with such a wonderful group of kids,” said JV coach Catherine Lindsey after the final matches.
“The girls winning this last match shows how much they have improved since the beginning of the season,” continued Coach Lindsey. “The boys had some tough opponents against Madison County but they played well and if they keep it up I can see them getting some varsity play time next season.”
