Lady golfers took swing at Peach

By Greg Sullivan

The Morgan County High School Lady Dogs golf team participated in the Georgia Peach Tournament at Hard Labor Creek on Saturday where the girls shot well in their respective groups in a tournament of 194 individuals.
Rachel Peters and Lauren Conway participated in the B flight competition where nine hole scores are kept in the tournament's second highest class. Conway shot a 50 and Peters shot 52 in the round.
Reba McClellan shot a 56 in the C flight, also playing nine holes. Nicolette Boissonneau played in D flight competition which was a nine-hole scramble. Boissonneau's team of four finished second in D flight.
"The girls' play right now is consistent," said Lady Dog golf coach Pam Hooten. "I am looking for the ninth graders, Reba Nicolette, to start dropping their scores since they are becoming more comfortable with competition and are no longer nervous."
"Rachel and Lauren have the ability to put together rounds in the forties instead of the fifties," Hooten said. "As the weather warms up, they will start to play better. It is tough to score well when it is cold and windy."
The team travels to Heritage on Thursday. They go to Athens to take on Athens Academy on next Tuesday.

Lady Dogs soccer have win streak snapped

Coming off two straight wins and carrying a 2-0 region record, the Lady Dogs soccer team ran into some tough competition last week.
Last Tuesday in Madison it was Monroe who handed the team a 5-0 loss after the Lady Dogs had just beaten GMC 5-0 the night before.
"I think we were tired from the game the night before," said Lady Dogs Head Coach Jessica Ward. "Even being tired the girls played hard and gave it their all. We just couldn't get it in the net."
Thursday, Ward said, the team looked better, but they still fell short 2-0 at Winder-Barrow.
"The girls played harder than ever with a lot of heart," Ward said. "We prevented a lot of goals from going in but we also had several opportunities. I am extremely pleased with the game considering Winder has always had an excellent soccer program."
The Lady Dogs have an important home region match-up this Friday with GMC where the Lady Dogs will look to get back in the win column.

The Morgan County High School Bulldogs soccer team picked up two wins last week, winning at Winder-Barrow on Thursday and beating Monroe Area last Tuesday.
The Dogs handled Winder-Barrow 3-1 behind goals from Greg Manzo, Sean Caple and Jacob Connelly.
In Madison on Tuesday the Dogs shut out Monroe Area 2-0 behind two Jacob Connelly goals.
The pair of wins improved the Dogs' overall record to 5-5. Their region record still stands at 2-0 after the non-region contests.
Bulldogs Head Coach Chip Meyer said the team seems to be confident after the wins.
"It's good," Meyer said. "The kids seem to be very upbeat and very excited."
The team will have this week off due to most of their opponents being out of town for their spring breaks.
The team will be back in action next week. They visit Social Circle next Tuesday and host GMC next Thursday.
The JV Dogs lost on Saturday to Oglethorpe 2-1 in Madison despite a goal from Zach Yost.

Dogs, Lady Dogs tennis beat Putnam, fall to Titans

The results were mixed for the Morgan County tennis teams last week. They struggled with North Oconee in make-up matches, but in much the same way they were dominated by the Titans and Lady Titans, they dominated the Putnam Eagles and Lady Eagles.
The boys and girls teams beat Putnam at first, second and third singles and first and second doubles in a total sweep. Unfortunately, that was their same fate with North Oconee.
"North Oconee is always a tough opponent," said Morgan County Head Tennis Coach Jim Fowler. "And they have a stellar guys and girls team this year."
Aside from their normal action, the tennis team got a chance to take a swing with and against parents in their player/parent tournament Friday in Madison.
"Kids and parents had a blast," Fowler said.
Logan Plumly, along with his dad Chuck Plumly, won the tournament edging Katherine Cooper, and her father David, in the championship.
"It is always fun to get the parents out playing with the kids," Fowler said. "I appreciated all the parents that volunteered to play and all the spectators that came to watch the event."
The team will be back in action Thursday when they host Franklin County. They travel to Macon Saturday to face Sumpter and Americus.

The Lady Pups soccer team picked up a big win last Wednesday at Oglethorpe, beating the Lady Patriots 4-0.
Griffin Gardner and Sophie Jackson each had two goals for Morgan County in the win.
"The whole team did a terrific job, coming in from the bench and playing their positions," said Lady Pups Head Coach Katie Greenway. "Coach Emily and I were pleased with the girls, especially in the second half."
Greenway said Shakarah Boswell played well at the goalie spot and that the team looked good at mid-field with Jackson and Judy Manzo.
The team will look to continue their good play Wednesday when they host a tough Athens Academy team. They travel to Athens to take on St. Joseph's on Friday.
