Doris Simmons Tomes
Doris Simmons Tomes, 61, died Friday, January 29, 2009 in Athens Regional Hospital. She was born August 2, 1947 to the late Joel Simmons Sr. and Frances Ingram.
She was a member of McHughes Hill Baptist Church. She served in the United States Army during the Viet Nam War. She was also a graduate nurse and worked as a registered nurse.
She is survived by her husband, Larry Tomes; five brothers, Sidney Simmons of Atlanta, Joel (Helen) Simons, Jr. of Madison, Charlie (Jean) Simmons of Silver Springs, Maryland, George Simmons of Duncanville, Texas, Joseph (Brenda) Simmons, of Indianapolis, Indiana; three sisters, Hattie Horton, Lucille Simmons and Sarah Burston, all of Madison; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends. Two brothers, three sisters and a son, James Earnest Horton Jr, preceded her in death.
Funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, February 7 at Springfield Baptist Church with the Rev. W. J. Reid and Rev. George C. Brown officiating. Interment was in Springfield Baptist Church Cemetery.
Casket attendants were her nephews and flower attendants were her nieces.
Jones and Turner Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
