Walter Phelps Veale, Sr.

Walter Phelps Veale, Sr., 80, of Mansfield, formerly of Greene County, died Monday, December 22, 2008 at Walton Regional Medical Center in Monroe. Born in Monroe County on May 20, 1928, he was the son of the late John Lee Veale, Sr. and Ollie Copelan Veale. He attended Greshamville School and married Jeannette Vandiver on December 24, 1950. For two years he served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. After the war he drove the school bus, worked in the cafeteria at Minnie G. Boswell Memorial Hospital and worked for the Enterprise Aluminum Plant in Eatonton. For 20 years he worked as a policeman, serving eight of those years for the City of Madison and 12 for the City of Greensboro. He was a member of Sewell Methodist Church in Mansfield. He enjoyed collecting old money, listening to football games and spending time with his dog, Blue.

Mr. Veale is survived by his wife of 58 years, Jeannette Vandiver Veale of Mansfield; three daughters, Patsy Mullins and husband Gary of Mansfield, Wanda Almand and husband Ronnie of Social Circle,  and Sandra Chaffin and husband Vic of Rutledge; a son, Walter P. Veale Jr. and wife Sandra of Portland, TN; a brother, Corry Veale and wife Eva of Dunwoody; 11 grandchildren, Katie Bragg, Todd Chaffin, Dena Astin, Ginger Howard, Dan Mullins, Bethany Veale, Matt Veale, Alyson Veale, Ronald Almand, Alex Almand and Amber McKibbin; 10 great grandchildren, Presley Bragg, Ollie Bragg, Lailie Bragg, Taylor Chaffin, Levi Chaffin, Christopher Astin, Tyler Astin, Matthew Astin, Hunter Howard and Hayden Howard; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by a brother, John Lee Veale, Jr.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, December 24 at 2:00 p.m. at the Sewell Methodist Church in Mansfield with Rev. Brad Waters and Rev. Richard Harris officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Jerry Lee Vandiver, Matt Veale, Paul Astin, Ronald Almand, Christopher Astin and Alex Almand. McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W.
