Christine Harmon Singleton
Christine Harmon Singleton, 96, of Madison died November 27, 2008 at her home. Mrs. Singleton was born March 30, 1912 in Taylor County to Jeff and Minnie Cox Harmon. She was married to Ernest M. Singleton who predeceased her.
A lady of many talents Mrs. Singleton enjoyed cooking, quilting, and growing flowers and vegetables. She was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who took great pleasure singing in the church choir.
She is survived by her children, Robert C. Singleton, Frances Stonecypher, John Singleton, Ernestine Ferguson, Patrick Singleton and Ernest Singleton; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A daughter Joyce Singleton predeceased her.
A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, November 29 at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Butler.

Annie Mae Ross Thomas“Dinah”
Mother Annie Mae Ross Thomas, 94, died Tuesday, November 18, 2008. She was born August 23, 1914 to the late Porter and Julia Ross. She was a native of Buckhead and a faithful mother of Mt. Zion Baptist Church until her health failed. She was fondly called “Dinah”. She was married to Ed Willie Thomas who preceded her in death. They were blessed with 10 children, two daughters, Mary Thomas Davis and Revonia Peters, and one son, Hubert Thomas, preceded her in death.
She is survived by three daughters, Annie Julia (Columbus) Johnson, Katherine (Johnny) Armour and Geraldine (Edward Moore); four sons, Lee Earnest (Carrie) Thomas, Ed Willie Thomas, Paul (Sylvia) Thomas and Dennis (Janice) Thomas; a special friend Kelly Johnson, 25 grandchildren, and a host of great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 22, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. W. J. Reid, Rev. Alfonzo Peters, and Rev. Charles Johnson officiating. Interment was in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.
Casket attendants were grandsons and nephews; flower attendants were her granddaughters and nieces.

Cammie Lee Brown
Cammie Lee Brown, 92, of Monroe died November 28, 2008. She was born in Walton County on May 25, 1916 to the late Eva Hamilton Garrett and the late Thomas Luther Garrett. She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Albert Brown.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Jim and Loretta Brown of Monroe, Thomas L. and Deborah Brown of Watkinsville; daughter and son-in-law, Connie B. and William Zachary of Decatur; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Perry and Betty Brown of Monroe and Charlene Brown of Monroe, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 29 at the Ray Memorial Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Thomas L. Brown and the Rev. George Rogers officiating. Interment followed at Resthaven Cemetery.

Charles Allen Crowley Jr.
Charles Allen Crowley Jr., 70, of Madison died December 1, 2008. He was born March 29, 1938 in Richmond County to Charles A. Crowley Sr. and Frances Dyer Crowley. He graduated high school in Thomson and graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in forestry. He married Beverly Eidson of Madison on December 20, 1958. In 1966 their family moved back to Morgan County and Mr. Crowley took over the Chevron Oil distributorship.
He was a member of the Army National Guard. He was active with the City of Madison and the Morgan County Station 2 Volunteer Fire Department for many years. He spent two summers working as a fire jumper with the forestry service battling wild fires in the western states. Mr. Crowley was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing and raising goats. He enjoyed cooking and many people enjoyed his Brunswick stew. He was a strong supporter of local sports programs. He was a member of Madison Baptist Church. He loved his family and friends and was an encouragement to many people.
Mr. Crowley is survived by his wife of almost 50 years, Beverly Eidson Crowley and their children, Cindy Crowley Patrick, Charles Allen Crowley III and Laurie, James Franklin Crowley and Angie and Robert Daniel Crowley and Denise, all of Madison; eight grandchildren, Chace Crowley, Josh Crowley, Bobby Patrick, Katie Patrick, Kimberly Crowley, Daniel Crowley, Brandon Crowley and Samantha Crowley; and a sister, Betty Evans.
Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 3 at Madison Baptist Church with Dr. James Ross officiating. Interment followed at Madison Memorial Park.

Charles “Sammy” Bowell
Charles “Sammy” Boswell, 88, of Manalapan Township died Sunday, November 23, 2008 at Pine Brook Care Center, Manalapan Township. He was born in Madison on July 23, 1920, the son of the late Fred and Elizabeth Boswell.
He retired in 1986 from the construction trade and was a member of the Construction Laborers Union, South Brunswick local. He was also employed by Phelps Dodge, South Brunswick and before closing worked many years for Sayre and Fisher Buick Company, Sayreville, NJ. He was an avid automobile mechanic. Many recognized him as the “neighborhood mechanic.”
His wife, Mattie Mae Boswell who died in 1998, preceded him in death. A brother, Grady Boswell of Charlotte, North Carolina, also preceded him in death.
He is survived by a son, Charles Boswell Jr. of Freehold, NJ, two daughters, Martha Harris of Toms River, NJ, Mary Robinson of Hamilton, NJ, a sister, Geneva Faith of Freehold, NJ, nine grandchildren, Pamela Harris, Brian Harris, David Harris, Fayette Harris, Marsha Harris, Charolyn Boswell, Robert Robinson, Michael Robinson and Cassandra Cragg; many great-grandchildren and cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Edna M. Hanson
Edna M. Hanson, age 86, of Rutledge, died November 24, 2008. She was born in Walton County, Georgia on January 16, 1922 to the late Boykin Malcom and the late Lucille Daniel Richardson.
She was preceded in death by her step-father, the late Walker Richardson.
Surviving are husband, John W. Hanson of Rutledge; son and daughter-in-law Harry and Pat Hanson of Rutledge; grandchildren Leigh and Matt Wilson of Madison and Bill Hanson of Rutledge; great-grandchildren Tori Wilson, Macy Malcom and Marlee Malcom, all of Madison.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 26 at 3 p.m. at the Chapel of Meadows Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Malcom officiating. Interment followed at Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery.

Frederick M. Gelbke
Frederick M. Gelbke, 68, of Buckhead died November 30, 2008 at Putnam General Hospital. He was born February 1, 1940 in Vienna, Ohio to Frederick and Helen Yunik Gelbke. He married Mary Eileen Glenn on June 14, 1975. They made their home in Naples, Florida where Mr. Gelbke worked for the City of Naples Parks and Recreation Department. He served in the United States Army. In 1996 Mr. and Mrs. Gelbke retired to Morgan County. He enjoyed fishing and short wave radio. He loved to camp and was known for his Cajun cooking.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Eileen Gelbke and one daughter, Tammy Clarke; his siblings, Louise Alibrando, Florence Stump, Dorothy Wyscarver and Richard Gelbke; two grandchildren, Buddy Clarke and Marrisa Davis and two great-grandchildren, Erica Perdue and Shane Perdue. He was preceded in death by three children, Debbie Perdue, Frederick Gelbke and Michael Gelbke.
A memorial service will be held in Ohio.

Jodie Lee Harrison
Jodie Lee Harrison, 90 of Rutledge, died November 28, 2008 at Morgan Memorial Hospital. He was born July 12, 1918 in Morgan County to Robert Lee and Lizzie Harper Harrison. He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Lou Hanson Harrison.
He is survived by his daughter, Ann Harrison and a sister-in-law, Lizzie Hanson Harper; several special nieces and nephews.
Mr. Harrison loved farming and gardening. He also enjoyed hunting and working with his cattle. He drove a school bus for 36 years. He attended Centennial Baptist Church.
Funeral service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 30 in the chapel at A. E. Carter Funeral Home with the Rev. Wilburn Hill and Rev. J. C. Studdard officiating. Interment was at Brownwood Baptist Church Cemetery.

Lydia Elaine Martin
Lydia Elaine Martin, 66, of Madison died November 24, 2008 at St. Mary’s Hospice in Bogart. Ms. Martin was born October 25, 1942 in Morgan County to John and Imogene Moon Martin. She was a graduate of Morgan County High School and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Madison.
Ms. Martin is survived by a son, Michael Hill and Ashley of Tallapoose, her mother, Imogene Martin; a sister, Wenonah Jean Thompson of Gainesville, two brothers, Paul Martin and Lindsey Martin, both from Madison.
She was an avid athlete and proud grandmother of Brittany, Madison and Lindsey Hill.
Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 26, with Rev. Layne Jenkins officiating. Interment followed at Madison Memorial Park.

Mary Alma Jenkins Messer
Mary Alma Messer, 83, of Madison died November 21, 2008 following a brief illness. She was born January 7, 1925 in Haywood County, North Carolina to Vincent and Arby Jenkins. She was a homemaker and a member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church.
She was married to the Mark Messer who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Oral Messer and Larry Messer and two daughters June Shoolcraft and Gladys Christine Keller.
Mrs. Messer is survived by her children, Richard Messer and Phyllis, Odessa Powers and Jesse, Nancy Bryan and Wayman and Ferris Messer and Kim; her siblings, Robert Jenkins, Polly Wyatt, Fred Jenkins and Catherine Lowe; 19 grandchildren and a number of great and great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Sunday, November 23 in the chapel of A. E. Carter Funeral Home. Interment followed at Madison City Cemetery.

Nora Elizabeth Bowman
Nora Elizabeth Bowman, 60, died at her home from a battle with cancer on November 23, 2008. She was born on November 25, 1947 in Morgan County to the late Jesse Lee Conner and Eris Mae Haley of Rutledge.
She is survived by her husband, Roy William Bowman of Farmington; one brother and four sisters, Daniel Conner of Rutledge; Sherry Hawk of Bostwick, Joyce Coltrain of Plymouth, North Carolina, Barbara Teran of Willow Grove, Penn., and Brenda Arnold of Rutledge; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial was held at 2 p.m. on November 26 at the chapel of Lord & Stephens. The Rev. Hoyt Johnson led the service. Pallbearers were Don Bradshaw, Tommy Hawk, Thomas Hawk, Keith Arnold, David Miller and Lawrence Miller.
Interment was at Huff Cemetery in Watkinsville attended by family and friends.
Ruby Shelton McClain
Ruby Shelton McClain, 88, of Bostwick died Thursday, November 27, 2008. Mrs. McClain was a retired inspector from Rutledge Sportswear. Her children and grandchildren were the joy of her life. She enjoyed cooking and visiting with family and friends.
Mrs. McClain was born September 21, 1920 in Morgan County to the late Herbert A. Shelton and Bertha Harper Shelton.
She is survived by her husband Perry Spearman McClain, and children, Linda and Scott Vickery of Colbert, Joyce and Jimmy Dixon of Statham, Royce and Vickie McClain of Madison, Irene and Roy Ruark of Bostwick and Michael and Sarah Hall of Union Point; 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, three sisters, two brothers and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two daughters, Rachel McClain andJoan Treadwell and a son, Isaac Hall.
Funeral service was held at 2:30 p.m. in the chapel at A. E. Carter Funeral Home on Saturday, November 29. Interment was at Prospect United Methodist Church Cemetery in Fairplay.

Gilbert Roland
Gladys Gilbert Roland, 89, died Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at University Hospital, Augusta. She was born April 29, 1919, the daughter of Thomas Marion Gilbert and Fannie Lou Ruark Gilbert. She was married to Archie Lee Roland who preceded her in death.
Mrs. Roland was a native of Bostwick and had lived in Augusta since 1949. She was a homemaker, member of the Eastern Star and a member of Southgate Baptist Church.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Franklin and Jean Cape of Bostwick, Thomas Lee and Hwan Hui Roland of Evans, James Archie Roland of Lincolnton, William E. and Phyllis Roland of Martinez; daughter, Faye Ellen Trotter of Winterville; sister and brother-in-law, Frances Gilbert Chandler and Mell of Good Hope; 20 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Friday, November 28 at 11 a.m. at Southgate Baptist Church with Rev. Joel Hawkins officiating. Pallbearers were Tom Roland, Ryan Roland, Craig Brown, Chuck Brown, Eddie Cape, Kenny Smith, Dustin Colson and Russell Fralick. Interment was at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
