Eloise Hitt Westmoreland

Eloise Hitt Westmoreland, 96, of Madison, formerly of Toccoa died Thursday, September 11, 2008 in Madison Health and Rehab.
She was born July 31, 1912 in Stephens County, daughter of the late Ode and Mae Hitt and had lived most of her life in Toccoa. She was a member of the Toccoa First United Methodist Church and was retired from Coats and Clark.
She is survived by a daughter-in-law, Judy Adams Westmoreland; six grandchildren, Mary Loyd Moss and Dennis and Laurie Crowley and Allen, all of Rutledge, Lavan Crisp and Mike and Marty Sisk and Kay, all of Buckhead, Lisa Ware and Brent of Toccoa and Leslie Broome and Kim of Acworth; 15 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Dr. L. J. Steele of Toccoa and a sister-in-law, Mary Hitt of Toccoa.
She was preceded in death by her son, James Odis Westmoreland and her daughter, Betty Jean Westmoreland Sisk; three sisters, Maude Lee Steele, Grace Richardson and her twin, Louise Hitt; and a brother, Dan Hitt.
Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 13 from the Chapel of Whitlock Mortuary in Toccoa with Pastor Tony Vismor officiating. Burial was in the Toccoa City Cemetery.
Her great-grandsons, Chad Moss, Matthew Moss, Chace Crowley, Josh Crowley, Loyd Sisk, Zach Ware, Austin Ware and Troy Crisp, served as pallbearers.
Whitlock Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Lillian M. Hoffman

Lillian M. (Jacubec) Hoffman, 79, died from cancer Saturday, September 13, 2008 at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle. She resided in Eatonton with her husband of 59 years, Robert D. Hoffman, retired Inspector General.
She was the daughter of John and Irma Jacubec, born February 1, 1929 in Struthers, Ohio. She graduated from Struthers High School in 1947 and married a classmate, Robert D. Hoffman on June 18, 1949. She worked as an accountant in Youngstown, Ohio, was an accomplished artist and quilter, leaving behind many fine oil paintings. She and her husband lived in Potomac, Maryland, Landsdowne, Virginia, Riverwood, Florida and Reynolds Plantation before moving to Eatonton.
She is also survived by their two sons David R. Hoffman of Australia and Lawrence J. Hoffman and his wife Anne Clark Hoffman of Fairfax, Virginia; seven grandchildren, Mary O’Shaughnessy, John Hoffman, Mark Hoffman and Anne Hoffman, all of Australia; Kristina Boulton of England, Robert T. Hoffman of Fairfax, Virginia and Sharon Hoffman of Frederick, Maryland; four great-grandchildren, Seth O’Shaughnessy, Karina Hoffman, Sierra Hoffman and Cayleb Hoffman, all of Australia; a sister Erma Gibson of New Port Richey, Florida.
Services were held at Carter Funeral Home in Madison on Wednesday, September 17 at 10:30 a.m. with interment following.

Leila Nickelson Wilson

Leila Nickelson Wilson,  88, of Madison, died Saturday, September 13, 2008, at her home. Originally from Greene County, Georgia she was born on August 23, 1920 to the late Floyd Adolph Nickelson and Clara Maude Wilson Nickelson. She attended high school in Hillsboro. She assisted the county nurse in Covington and worked at Alto with lung patients. For a while she was a waitress at Thompson’s Restaurant in Atlanta. After going to business school she worked as a secretary for a Cardboard Box Company in Decatur. While in Decatur she took some healthcare courses and became a caretaker for those returning home from the hospital. When she retired in 1990, she returned to Madison where she was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Wilson; daughter, Betty Kilgore; sister, Mary Virginia Cole; and brothers, Joseph H. Nickelson and Floyd A. Nickelson, Jr. She is survived by two sisters, Lillian Fay Walters of Madison and Beatrice Nickelson of Greensboro; two brothers, John Welch Nickelson of Portsmouth, VA and M. Louis Nickelson of Madison; grandson, Robby Poss; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Graveside services was held on Tuesday, September 16 at 2:00 p.m. at Greensboro City Cemetery in Greensboro with Pastor Fernando Verduzco officiating.

Lois Grant Johnson

Lois Grant Johnson, 56, died August 23, 2008. She was born March 19, 1952 in Morgan County to Willie Mae Grant and the late Ulysses Grant Sr. of Madison.
Two brothers Ulysses Jr. and Moses Grant preceded her in death, both of Madison.
She is survived by her mother, Willie Mae Grant, her husband, James Johnson; two daughters, Maryanne Jackson and Nicole Johnson; sister, Anna Mae Grant; five brothers and sisters-in-law, Johnny (Lillie) Johnson, Bill (Mary) Johnson, Anderson (Patricia) Johnson, Stacey (Denise) Johnson and two grandchildren, D’Angelo and Arianna Jackson; a son-in-law, Anthony Jackson, an adopted son, Dwayne (my boy) Foster, and a host of friends, nieces, nephews cousins and other relatives.
Funeral service was held at 1 p.m. Thursday, August 28 at Calvary Baptist Church with the Pastor Hoke L. Smith officiating and assisted by Rev. Michael Ross Sr. Interment was in Bethlehem Cemetery in Madison.
Flower ladies were Angela Phillips, Aimee Monford, Lillie Drake, Candace Coats and Jovan Sheats. Pallbearers were Anthony Jackson, Bill Johnson, Johnny Johnson, Dawayne Johnson, Stacey Johnson and Anderson Johnson.

Eddie Morris Walker Jr.

Eddie Morris Walker Jr., 47, known as “Shimmy” died September 1, 2008 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Greensboro. He was born in Putnam County on October 19, 1960 to Carrie Bell Walker and the late Eddie Walker Sr. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he served as a deacon. He was employed with Kaiser Warren in Conyers for 15 years.
He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Vanessa Farley Walker; a daughter, Princely Walker of Madison, two sons, Tourey (Mary) Farley of Jacksonville, Florida and Ladarrius Walker of Madison; a grandson, Princeton Jashaw Walker of Madison; his mother, Carrie Bell Walker of Eatonton; two sisters, Gennita Walker of Eatonton and Queenie Butts of Milledgeville; seven brothers, Willie (Queen) Oliver of Eatonton, Freddie (Cathy) Oliver of Fayetteville, David Oliver, John (Linda) Walker, and Gary (Linda) Walker, all of Eatonton, Robert Walker of Decatur and Jesse Waller Sr. of Milledgeville; a mother-in-law, Catherine Harris Farley of Eatonton; sisters-in-law, Martha Farley and Karen (Lonnie) Lewis of Eatonton; brothers-in-law, Woody Farley, Grayline Farley and Darryl Farley, all of Eatonton, Reggie (Debbie) Farley of Warner Robins, and Dion Farley of Atlanta and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 6 at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Hoke L. Smith officiating and assisted by Rev. Michael Ross. Interment was in East Eatonton Cemetery.

Susan Virginia Fitzgerald
 
Susan V. Fitzgerald, 66, of Shady Dale, died Wednesday, September 3, 2008. She was born in Amherst, Maine to the late Ralph and Katherine Shea Hummel. She lived in Okeechobee, Florida with her husband, the late Thomas H. Fitzgerald until moving to Jasper County 38 years ago. She was a member of The St. Brigigs Catholic Church. She attended Stockbridge College graduating with a degree in Animal Husbandy.
Survivors are her daughters and son-in-law, Sheila E. Fitzgerald of Madison, Kathleen C. and Timothy Miller of Watkinsville, and Rachel E Fitzgerald of Shady Dale; grandchildren, Patrick O’Shea Torbert, Tori and Zackery Miller and Thomas C. Smalling.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to The St. Mary’s Hospice in Bogart.

Izeal Mills

Izeal Mills, 66, died Friday, September 5, 2008. He was born in Madison on July 8, 1942 to the late Jesse Mills and the late Mary Grant Mills.
He was a member of Wallace Grove Baptist Church. He was employed with Shepherd Construction Company, where he had retired.
He is survived by his wife, Minister Ruby Mills; three daughters, Aris Clay of Athens, Salema Mills of Madison, Casey Smith of Kansas City, Kansas; a son, Fredrick and his wife Belinda of Covington; two step-daughters, Patricia Mathis of Madison, Roslind and her husband Charles Lester of Athens; two step-sons, Minister Willie and his wife Angela Jones of South Carolina, Eddie and his wife Odessia Mathis of Madison; three sisters, Beatrice and her husband Roger Lowe of Atlanta, Della M. Boswell of Charlotte, N.C., Eva and her husband Horace Wade of Madison; four brothers, L. C. Mills of New York, Joe L. Mills of Atlanta, Deacon Henry and his wife Louise Mills and Dave Thomas, all of Covington; 17 grandchildren and a host of loving relatives and many friends.
Funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, September 12 at Wallace Grove Baptist Church in Rutledge with the Rev. Tommy Chatman officiating. Interment was in Wallace Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
Flower attendants and casket attendants were relatives and friends.

Oral V. Messer

Oral V. Messer, 52, of Madison died Thursday, September 11, 2008. He was born in Bailey, North Carolina to the late Mark Irving Messer and Mary Alma Jenkins Messer. He worked as a radio repairman.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Alma Jenkins Messer; two sisters, Odessa Powers and Nancy Bryant and two brothers, Lowell Messer and Ferris Messer, nieces and nephews.
He was buried September 12 at Fairview Cemetery in Madison.
