Last Friday, Morgan County traveled to Elbert County to compete against the Blue Devils for the first region games of 2013. The JV team won 51-30, the varsity girls lost 40-55, and the varsity boys tacked on another win, 71-68 against Elbert County.
The JV team had little difficulty maintaining control over Elbert County and accrued a 21-point lead over the Blue Devils by the end of the game.
Marcus Ford led the JV team with 12 points.
After the first quarter of the girls varsity game, the score was 12-12, but the Elbert girls began to overpower the Dogs in the second quarter, and Morgan County wasn’t able to catch Elbert before the end of the game, losing 40-55.
Alexis Brown scored 15 points against Elbert, and Carvetta Williams added 12 for the Dogs.
By the time the boys varsity game was about to begin, the energy in the arena had reached a fever pitch.
Elbert County took an early lead over Morgan County with aggressive and fast play through the first quarter, but Morgan County had a chance to catch up before the half.
Morgan County built a two-point lead through the third, but the score seesawed in the last quarter.
With seven seconds to play, Morgan County tied the score at 68-68 and then called a time out with possession of the ball.
After an inbound to Tookie Brown, it looked like the game would go into overtime, as Elbert County’s defenders weren’t letting Brown beyond the three-point line, but, astonishingly, Brown shot and made a three-point goal to put Morgan County ahead.
“As a coach, it isn’t surprising to me,” said Coach Charlemagne Gibbons about the team’s comeback and Brown’s game-winning shot. “Tookie is one of the best players in the state. He is a workaholic.”
The MCHS basketball teams played against Jackson County on Tuesday. Their next home games will be against region opponents Franklin County at home this Friday beginning at 7 p.m.
