“We Buy Gold” employee the subject of council

By Stephanie Johns

Madison Councilman Michael Naples, at last week's council meeting, shared concerns about the “We Buy Gold” employee who walks the sidewalk in front of that business.
Naples said a constituent thought the employee needed help. The constituent said she panicked and turned into the parking lot.
“She worried she could have caused an accident,” he shared.
Naples then asked about the city’s sign ordinance and how it pertains to this type of advertising.
City attorney Joe Reitman said if a use is not expressly listed, it is prohibited.
“That would rise to the level of a nuisance,” he said.
City planner Monica Callahan said they have addressed other advertisers on the public right of way.
Mayor Bruce Gilbert asked how other cities handle this ordinance.
Callahan replied that staff could research that. She added that she may have a document provided by a Watkinsville lawyer who specializes in the First Amendment.
No action was taken.
