Fifth grader wins computer

Morgan County Elementary School fifth grader Micky Ervin won a computer through Morgan County 4-H’s “Need a Computer?” contest.
One of the conditions of applying for the computer: there could not be a computer already in the home.
Her teacher, Kim Barrett, said she was excited that Ervin was chosen to receive the computer.
“She’s very deserving of this,” she said. “She’s an excellent student with no behavior problems.”
In her letter of recommendation Barrett wrote, “A computer will help Micky tremendously with her education. She will be able to gain valuable information that could be right at her fingertips!”
Barrett said that every Friday the class has a scavenger hunt in which students are asked questions from the standards. Answers to the questions can be found in their textbooks.
Finding the answer to one question in a book was not enough for Ervin.
According to Barrett, Ervin used her grandmother’s computer to research information about Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell.
“This is typical of Micky, she always goes above and beyond what is required of her,” wrote Barrett.
Barrett explained that the school uses Edmoto and Compass Learning computer programs as well as different educational websites.
“Technology at home would really benefit her,” she said.
