Commission adds thrift stores as permitted use

The Morgan County Planning Commission approved all four requests that came before it during its November meeting.
Morgan County requested a text amendment to the City of Madison Zoning Ordinance to have secondhand thrift stores added as a permitted use in the Professional / Limited Commercial Zoning District (P2).
Madison City Planner Bryce Jaeck said that he had received “quite a few” letters in support of this request and no objections.
Berry Rainwater, President of Joseph’s Coat, said that if the request were denied they would have to close the 501(c)3 store on Dec. 31.
The county also requested three zoning map amendments: one from Lakeshore Park (LP) to Recreation Conservation (RC), one from Lakeshore Marina (LM) to Recreation Conservation (RC), and one from Office Institutional (OI) to General Commercial (C2).
Chairman Brian Lehman noted that each of the rezoning requests were predicated on actions taken by the commission during its last meeting. At that meeting the commission made several amendments to its zoning ordinance.
County Planning Director Chuck Jarrell clarified that the zoning categories for each of these parcels were eliminated during that meeting.
No member of the public spoke either in support or opposition of these requests.
