On Saturday, November 24, the Morgan County High School basketball teams will be hosting the annual SweetSouth Tip-Off Classic at the MCHS gymnasium.
Twelve teams representing eight schools will be competing in six games in the tournament.
Head Coach Charlemagne Gibbons is excited about the level of competition at the games.
“It’s got some really good teams and a few top players from around the state,” said Gibbons.
Morgan County’s teams will be competing in two games throughout the day. The varsity girls will be playing against Washington County at 12:30 p.m. and the varsity boys will be playing Alcovy at 8 p.m. These will be the first and last games of the day, respectively.
Morgan County is going to have its work cut out for it during the tournament. Both of the teams that they are facing made it into the postseason in their divisions last year with winning seasons.
The Washington County Golden Hawks are the girls’ opponent of the day. Last year, they had a nearly-perfect season; their only loss was to the Columbia Eagles in the AAA Championship Game.
“Alicia Gray [is] one of the top players in the country,” said Gibbons about Washington County’s point guard.
According to Gibbons, Gray has already committed to the University of North Carolina.
The varsity boys’ team will be playing against the Alcovy Tigers. The Bulldogs came away with a 59-57 victory last year when they met up with the Tigers.
The Tigers made it to the postseason last year as well, competing in the 3A-AAAA elite 8. In the preseason this year, they have already been ranked in the top 10.
Each match of day promises to be an exciting engagement between two good teams.
“This will be a great day of basketball,” said Gibbons.
“ [We] hope to have lots of people out to see the action.”
Come out to support the MCHS basketball team’s only home tournament of the year this Saturday beginning at 12:30 p.m. Tickets will be $8 for the whole day, and there will be a full concession stand available at the gym.
