Morgan places fifth at Region

The Morgan County High School competed in the 8-AAA Region Meet last Thursday. The meet took place at the East Jackson High School in Commerce.
Although there were good performances by the Morgan County runners, including a school record on a 5K by Wyatt Howard, the Boys Varsity team placed fifth overall, which means that they won’t advance to the State Meet next Saturday in Carrollton.
Howard’s time of 17 minute and 16 seconds on the 5K beat the Morgan County High School’s previous record, which was set by Zach Stone earlier this year, by almost two seconds. Howard placed 12th overall in the Boys Varsity 5K, making him All-Region, Second Team.
During the early meets this year, Howard was still recovering from a hamstring tear that took place during the last track season. Wyatt’s father, Keith Howard, stated that Wyatt’s motivation to improve over the course of the season was, “it is not how you start the season, but how you finish the season.”
A few other runners placed personal records during the Region Meet, including Nic Connelly, with a time of 18 minutes and 56 seconds.
Although this meet was the end of the cross country season for this school year, many of the members of the cross country team also take part in other extracurricular activities including track and field in the Spring.
