Members of the Morgan County Marlins Swim Team performed exhibition races for members of Mrs. O’Neal and Mrs. Crisps’ third-grade classes last Friday afternoon in the Morgan County Aquatic Center.
The seven swimmers, whose ages range from 11-16, performed a team 100-yard medley race and an individual 50-yard freestyle race. In the medley race, the swimmers had to perform four different types of swimming strokes, the backstroke, the breaststroke, the butterfly stroke and a freestyle stroke.
Andy Dunston, the director of the Aquatic Center and the head coach of the Marlins, hopes that the exhibition will, “generate interest and awareness that we have a swim team.”
Swimmers of all ages can qualify to be on the Marlins swim team. According to Dunston, the youngest swimmer they currently have is only 5-years-old.
“I think we have elementary-age children in the community that don’t know they can take part,” said Dunston.
The swim team is having meets throughout the fall, winter and early spring, including a meet in Morgan County that will be hosted by the Marlins and take place on October 27.
Instructions and qualifications for joining the Marlins swim team are posted on the Morgan County Recreation Department’s website at http://mcplayrec.org/
For swimmers who aren’t interested in joining the team but would like to use the Aquatic Center’s facilities, hours and fees are also posted on the recreation department’s website.
