William Taylor “W.T.” McBroom

William Taylor “W.T.” McBroom, age 91, a lifelong resident of Barnesville, died surrounded by his family on September 23, 2012. Mr. McBroom died at the Medical Center of Central Georgia after a brief illness resulting from Acute Respiratory Distress. He was the son of the late William Taylor McBroom, Sr. and the late Viola Chambers McBroom, and was also preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.
At the start of World War II, he entered the United States Army and served in the China, Burma, India Theater of Operations. Assigned to the 3844 Quarter Master Truck Company, he delivered supplies over the Ledo and Burma Roads as well as air supply of the Himalayas.
Upon returning from the war, he reentered school where he met his wife of 64 years, Jean Head McBroom. They had two sons: Bill McBroom and Keith McBroom.
Mr. McBroom was employed by the National Life and Accident Insurance Company, and retired after 29 years of service. Six months later he went back to work and was employed by Thomaston Mills for 10 years before retiring the final time.
Mr. McBroom was a longstanding member of Bethel Baptist Church of Milner, where he served as deacon. Although suffering from macular degeneration and blindness in his later years, he remained active and walked two miles daily until shortly before his death.
In addition to his wife and sons, he is survived by his brother, William Ralph McBroom; daughters-in-law, Jan McBroom and Sheila McBroom; granddaughters, Callie Davis and Kathryn McBroom; great-grandchildren, Lola Grace Davis, Willow Ann Davis, Jack Davis, and Maci Davis; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Mr. Taylor “W.T.” McBroom, Jr. were conducted Wednesday, September 26 at 11 o’clock in the Chapel of Williams Funeral Home with interment in Lamar Memory Gardens. The family received friends at the Williams Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 25, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.
