A Greensboro man died Monday night after a vehicle in which he was a passenger ran off Interstate 20 and flipped several times.
According to Senior Trooper Brad Walker, Georgia State Patrol, Ranulfo Lopez, 31, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 7:48 p.m. wreck. Walker said the left rear tire of a 1996 Ford Explorer driven by Angel Ramos, 32, Greensboro, separated moments before the incident. Walker said the tread from the tire detached and Ramos attempted to steer the vehicle to the east-bound emergency lane.
Near the emergency lane, Walker said, the vehicle swerved suddenly towards the median and, once in the median, rolled several times. Ramos was ejected from the vehicle. She was life-flighted to the Atlanta Medical Center. Neither Ramos nor Lopez were wearing seat belts, Walker said.
The incident occurred near the 115 mile marker east of Madison. Walker said Ramos told him they had just entered the interstate from the Madison 115 exit when the incident occurred. The tire was a temporary tire, Walker said, and was of a different dimension from the tire on the opposite side of the vehicle. Charges in the incident are pending.
