Scoring the Match
{Individual scoring}

The match official awards points, issues warnings and declares the winner of each match. Score and time is kept on the sidelines. Spectators can follow the progress by looking for red/green correlation on the scoreboard, ankle bands (on the wrestler) and arm bands (on the official). Note: Duals & tournament scoring When teams compete in duals and tournaments, wrestlers are scored individually in matches, but their teams accumulate points, as well. Team points are awarded differently for duals and tournaments, but are all scored after each match is complete.

Points
{The eight basic ways to score in high school wrestling}

1. Takedown (2 pts.) When the neutral wrestler takes the opponent down to the mat and becomes the offensive wrestler.

2. Escape (1 pt.) When the defensive wrestler gets out from underneath the opponent’s control and gets into the neutral position and is facing the opponent.

3. Reversal (2 pts.) When the defensive wrestler gets out from underneath the opponent’s control and gets on top of or behind the opponent in one move and becomes the offensive wrestler.

4.  Near Fall 2 (2 pts.) When the offensive wrestler turns the opponent over onto their back and holds them at a 45-degree angle or less for between 2-4 seconds. Only one set of near fall points can be awarded for each pinning hold and they cannot be awarded until after the pinning has ended. Also awarded when the defensive wrestler screams (unethical unless they are injured) to stop the match while they are being turned over toward their back.

5.  Near Fall 3 (3 pts.) When the offensive wrestler holds the defensive wrestler within the two-point near fall criteria for five or more consecutive seconds in a row, a three-point near fall will be awarded instead of two. Also, when the defensive wrestler screams (unethical unless they are injured) to stop the match after being within two point near fall criteria (2-4 count by the referee).

6. Near Fall 4 (4 pts.) When the offensive wrestler has earned a three-point near fall (5 count by the referee) and the defensive wrestler screams (unethical unless they are injured) to stop the match, the offensive wrestler will be awarded a four-point near fall instead of the three.

7.  Penalty Points (1 or 2 pts.) A wrestler in any position can earn one or two penalty points when their opponent breaks the rules of wrestling. These rules include no stalling, no swearing, kicking, scratching, biting, hitting, slamming an opponent to the mat, bending any body part beyond the normal range of motion or using illegal holds from the illegal holds list. The first offense is a one-point penalty. The second offense is a one-point penalty. The third offense is a two-point penalty. The fourth offense is disqualification.

8. Caution and Caution Point (0 pt. and 1 pt.) A wrestler in any position can earn one caution point from the third caution on for each time their opponent is cautioned by the referee for starting too quick before the whistle OR by lining up incorrectly when starting from the referee’s position or on their feet. Each wrestler is allowed two cautions before the caution penalty points begin. Caution points are separate from penalty points and do not count on the penalty chart towards disqualification.
