Morgan wrestlers honored in Atlanta
Staff Reports
Two Morgan County High School wrestlers were honored Sunday during the 2010 Georgia High School Wrestling Award Show at the Rialto Theatre in Atlanta.
State champions J.R. Wert (112 pounds) and Jacob Akins (119 pounds) both received laser etched individualized awards at the awards presentation. The show was a black tie event sponsored by the Georgia national Wrestling Alliance, the Atlanta Takedown Association, Team Georgia Wrestling and the Georgia High School Association.
Wert, a freshman, and Akins, a junior at Morgan County High School, were the first wrestlers to win individual state championships from Morgan County High School in the past five years.
Additionally, Wert was named Freshman Wrestler of the Year for all state classifications.
“The Georgia National Wrestling Association, the Atlanta Takedown Association and the Georgia High School Association did an unbelievable job of rolling out the red carpet with this event for the truly elite of Georgia wrestling,” said Morgan County High School Head Wrestling Coach John Robbins.
“These organizations work around the clock to promote the sport of wrestling in our state and events such as this one make it easy to see why the support for this sport is spreading like wild fire in Georgia. It was great to see two of our guys on the stage and goes without saying they deserve every bit of the lime light they got on Sunday. J.R. winning freshman of the year was certainly a milestone in his career and for Morgan County athletics.”
